Two Community Members to Join BGCSM Board of Directors

Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos has announced the appointment of two additions to its Board of Directors. This expands the BGCSM Board of Directors to 14 members. The newest board directors include Leon Wyden, Vice President, Finance & Administrative Services at California State University San Marcos, and Maria Gomez, Field Representative for EDCO Waste & Recycling Services, local business and community leaders who both expressed a strong commitment and desire to furthering opportunities for local youth.


“Leon and Maria are wonderful additions to our Board of Directors,” said Cathy Baur, President & CEO for the youth development organization. “They both bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to what is already a very strong board.”


The new additions to the Board of Directors:

Leon Wyden


Leon L. Wyden Jr. has been working in higher education finance since 2006. He currently serves as Vice President, Finance & Administrative Services at California State University San Marcos. Previous positions include vice president for administration and finance at Frostburg State University, vice president for business affairs at the University of Findlay, vice president for finance and administration at Tiffin University, and associate vice president of finance and planning at Upper Iowa University.


Wyden is a CPA whose first position in higher education was as Deputy Controller at Howard University. He began his career with the accounting firm Ernst & Young in Detroit, followed by recruitment to a position at the pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick, N.J. This position was the start of a 28-year career in senior financial positions in the automotive and technology industries. Wyden and his wife Karen, reside in San Marcos, CA. They have two adult sons who live in Michigan.

Maria Gomez



Maria Gomez has been with EDCO Waste & Recycling for over 16 years. In her duties as Field Representative, she is responsible for the implementation of recycling and organics mandates that meet the State of California CalRecycle requirements in the cities of Vista and San Marcos. Previously, she held the position of Customer Service, which entailed daily interactions with customers seeking information and solutions in a professional and positive manner. She is currently an Ambassador for the Vista Chamber of Commerce and a booster member for the Mission Hills High School Dance Team.


The Boys & Girls Club is very important to her family - Her 3 children, which include twins, are currently members of San Marcos. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and spending time with her family.

The evening highlighted their inspiring stories, resilience and aspirations, serving as a powerful reminder of the power of youth voices and the importance of providing opportunities for young people to thrive. We are so proud of all they have accomplished and excited to see the bright futures ahead of them.
